The Women’s Fund for Ireland
In April 2010, The Community Foundation for Ireland launched Ireland's first ever Women’s Fund. The Fund - established by women for women - is solely dedicated to supporting women’s causes and charitable initiatives across the country.
The Fund will tackle the problems facing women and girls in Ireland today by raising funds, promoting women’s organisations and raising awareness of the challenges facing women (exact criteria for applicants will be provided in due course). The Fund will be dedicated to supporting a number of varying women’s issues by giving small grants to enable positive change at the grassroots and strategic level and tackle women’s inequality at its source.
To kick start the Women’s Fund for Ireland, The Community Foundation for Ireland pledged €100,000 for a challenge grant. So for €1,000 donated for the permanent endowment by an individual, family, business or organisation, a matching amount of €500 is being be provided by The Community Foundation. By July 2010, €150,000 had been pleged by donors, matched with €75,000 from The Community Foundation. We look forward to providing the additional match amounts in the near future, as further donations are secured. This is a great start and ensures that The Fund will make grants FOREVER! Thank you very, very much to our first donors...
Right around the world women are disproportionately affected by varying issues and this Fund follows on international trends. The US already has hundreds of dedicated women's funds and there are also a umber i England and Scotland - some run by community foundations there. For the first year, energies will be focussed on generating funding for the fund and in 2011 the first grants will be awarded from the fund (exact dates tbc).
The Women's Fund for Ireland is Irish Tatler Magazine's chosen charity of the year.
The Women's Fund for Ireland was launched at a landmark symposium on Women in Philanthropy which was addressed by our patron President Mary McAleese. On the day, a number of female philanthropists addressed an audience of over 100 women and spoke to them about their potential impacts on society through philanthropy. See these inspirational videos below to hear what was said on the day!
