County Funds
County Monaghan Fund
The County Monaghan Fund was the first County Fund to be established and was launched in 2004 through the support of the County Monaghan Community Network.
This permanent fund seeks to support local charities, communities and strategic initiatives for the long-term benefit of County Monaghan. Already, this permanent fund has grown to over €350,000, with private contributions ranging from €250 to €50,000 and a number of local groups and charities already benefitting.
The County Monaghan Fund has a distinguished local board made up of representatives from the public, private and community and voluntary sectors.
The Committee is chaired by Cathal McCarthy who took over the chairmanship from Frank Cosgrove in 2008.
The other committee members are:
- Michael Treanor (Vice Chairperson),
- Francis McCarron (Secretary),
- Frank Cosgrove (Treasurer)
- Martin McVicar (Asst. Secretary),
- Des Sheridan (PRO),
- Robert Moffett (Asst. PRO)
- Julie Gilhooley, Padraig Watters, Paddy Gallogly, Kieran Finlay, Siobhan McCormick, Maurice Moffett, Robert Wilson and Declan Nelson.
Examples of Grants made so far
By 2008, over €40,000 had been committed to important projects and initiatives. These have included:
- Monaghan County Enterprise Board - Student Enterprise Programme. This programme teaches young people the skills they need to be the business leaders of tomorrow.
- DCU Access Education Fund. This gives disadvantaged students from County Monaghan an opportunity to achieve a 3rd level education. It also encourages them to put their learning to use for the benefit of Co Monaghan.
- Defibrillator Training for Trainers project. Defibrillators save lives and many communities throughout County Monaghan have invested in both equipment and training in its use. This project ensures that selected members within local communities have the necessary skills to train their peers in the use of defibrillator equipment at no cost. In the long term, this is a huge saving for the local community.
In addition, The County Monaghan Fund realises that in some circumstances, a need is too pressing to wait for a long term solution. Therefore, it lends support to charitable causes where other funds are unavailable or insufficient to address a current need. For example, it has provided support to:
The County Monaghan Alzheimers Committee, Ballybay Cailini, 2nd & 3rd Monaghan Scouts Troops, Carrickasedge Social Centre, Carrickroe Community Centre, Castleblayney Arts and Community Centre, Clones Community Forum, Errigal Truagh Special Needs Group, Croi Community Development, Latton Social Services, Monaghan County Childcare Committee, “A Club” Ardaghey, Clones Daycare for the Elderly, Knockatallon Development Committee, Carrick CPR Defibrillator Equipment, Ballybay Community Centre Defibrillator Equipment, Teach na nDaoine Defibrillator Equipment, Ballybay Community Creche, Ballinode Hall Committee, Ceara Women's Group, Lough Egish Co Monaghan Special Needs, Active Parents Castleblayney, Irish Sex Education Network (Intellectual Disabilities), St Vincent de Paul Kilmore & Drumsnatt Conference.
