Large Impact Grants

An example of a large project supported by a multi-annual grant from us was the development and progression of the National LGBT Helpline.

The LGBT Helpline was established to provide a confidential and non-judgemental listening, support and information service for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people nationally. LGBT people are recognised as a group at risk of mental health difficulties and suicidal behaviour both of which can be compounded by isolation and lack of social support.

Through the establishment of the national LGBT Helpline its invaluable support and information service is now provided in a more streamlined, coordinated and accessible way. Furthermore, the service has been enhanced through the development of a website, data-gathering systems and the creation of a National coordinator role to support and sustain the volunteer effort underlying the service.

There have been very significant impacts over the 4-year period of the grant and these include the establishment of a national lo-call number open 7 days per week (1890 929 539) and a dedicated service website with over 32,000 visits in first 2 years.
